The Cataract & Lasik Center of Utah was the first facility in Utah County to perform small-incision cataract surgery, and the first Medicare-certified eye surgical center in the state. The surgery is done in our fully equipped surgical suite with sophisticated monitors, back-up power and state-of-the art ophthalmic equipment.

To restore clear vision for someone with a cataract, the cloudy natural lens needs to be replaced. At the Cataract & Lasik Center of Utah the technique used is called phacoemulsification, an advanced and painless method of cataract removal.

During cataract surgery in Salt Lake City, a tiny ultrasonic probe breaks up the cataract and draws it away. Once the cataract is removed, a permanent artificial lens is inserted. Patients commonly experience dramatically improved vision within a few hours of their procedure.

Cataract Removal Steps

Step 1The first step is to make a small opening in the front of the capsule that holds the natural lens or cataract.
Step 2The next step is to insert the small ultrasonic probe into the eye. The probe breaks up the lens into tiny pieces and removes them.
Step 3A permanent, artificial lens is then folded and inserted into the eye.
Step 4The new lens then unfolds and is positioned permanently into place.

After surgery with traditional monofocal lenses, most people experience very good vision either at distance or at near. In most cases, the monofocal lens provides good distance vision for driving, walking and some everyday activities. However, most people receiving monofocal lenses still require reading glasses or bifocals to have a full range of vision.

For those patients looking for more independence from readers, bifocals or even trifocals, or for those struggling with astigmatism, the Cataract & Lasik Center of Utah is proud to offer many advanced options.

The YAG Laser-Secondary Cataracts

One important instrument in providing modern after-cataract care is the YAG laser. Secondary cataracts develop when the clear capsule within the eye, which holds the new artificial lens, becomes cloudy. The Cataract & Lasik Center of Utah’s YAG laser uses light rays to make a small opening in this capsule (or membrane) right in the office, painlessly, and without traditional surgery. This opening restores good vision by allowing the light rays to focus clearly on the retina again. The procedure is required in about 20% of prior cataract patients, is only performed once, and takes only a few minutes with no restrictions afterwards.
